In December 2009, the Friends of Safety City board donated the 2,000 square-foot building to the City of Abilene. The board raised approximately $160,000 for the Fire Safety Houses construction. The Fire Safety House replaces an 8 foot by 30 foot Fire Safety Trailer which served as a teaching classroom, only accommodating 20 students at a time. The new facility is modeled after the former #2 Fire Station on South 5th and Butternut Streets. It features an engine room, a classroom with bleacher style seating for up to 60 students; a room that has a realistic kitchen where kitchen safety will be taught; and a bedroom setting where students will learn survival tactics to utilize in case of a house fire.
