Nowhere in the world can any carnival or Mardi Gras be compared with the Cape Town Coon Carnivals in its splendor, gaiety and unmistakably Cape flavor. Every New Year, thousands of minstrels take to the streets in a dazzling display of colourful satin uniforms, shiny parasols, painted faces and foot-tapping banjo tunes that accompany the traditional folk songs.
It was also their funny answer on the black painted Al Johnson. The Coloured community of Cape Town who themselves had just recently been emancipated from slavery, mimicked these performers, but in their case, painted their faces white, and sang merry but sarcastic songs, often ridiculing their former masters. Although it is called the Coon Carnival ("Kaapse Klopse") by Capetonians, local authorities have renamed the festival the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, because the term "coon" has a derogatory connotation for some people.
The minstrel parade on January 2nd 2009 in Cape Town is a must for everyone with a camcorder. So book now and enjoy!
