High and lows dominate weather. You can even see the highs going left to right across the weather maps, pulled by the eastward monthly orbit of the moon, moving at the average speed of the moon of 13deg per day. The highs are in charge because they are heavier air masses. The high pressure systems follow the moon when the moon changes hemispheres. The lows slip between. The moon is going north, a high over the east of Australia followed and a low got forced downwards carrying rain down NZ's west coast.
