Kandinsky stressed the impact of color and its association with music, explaining that "color is a means of exerting direct influence upon the soul. Color is a keyboard. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano, with its many strings.
Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa. He enrolled at the U. of Moscow to study law and economics. He was offered a professorship at the U. of Dorpat. He started his painting studies at the age of 30. In 1896 he settled in Munich & studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He went back to Moscow in 1914 after World War I began. He didn't like the official art theories in Moscow, so he returned to Germany in 1921.
He taught at the Bauhaus school of art & architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. Then he moved to France where he lived the rest of his life. He became a French citizen in 1939 & died in 1944.
