Very Strange Phenomenon: the ray and the cross

Can anyone explain this strange phenomenon?
This grey ray appeared on december 22, 1998 at about 14h 40m LT. The camcorder was working perfectly, without any flaw. I taken a photo with a Nikon Pronea camera and the streak was there also.
The cross, 12 metres high, is on top of Monte Pendolo, near Naples.
Can someone give me a scientific explanation of this?

Why didn't you film it longer if it was so amazing? Why only 32 seconds?

I first saw the phenomenon through binoculars, then I took a picture and then I tried the camera and I did the movie clip, lasted around ten minutes or less.

How was the weather?, if there was a storm building it could have been an ion stream caused by electrical build-up in the air, these are quite common in electrical storms, and if they meet a downward stream you get a bolt of lightning.

If however it was clear and sunny then I cannot offer an explanation I'm afraid.

I agree with nickerbelly - prior to an electrical strike their are elements connecting earth and sky - the cross would have been a contact point like a lightning rod - ionised air may have built a track to it.
