A Lesson in Humility: Humility 101 [John Candy in Splash, 1984]

This is a classic slapstick scene by the late-great John Candy. This scene was done before CGI was commonplace. John actually hit the ball, and it returned to hit him, smack-dab in the forehead. I always wondered how many takes it took before they got the shot, because, you'll notice, it's all done in one take, not some cheap two-shot (using two different camera angles).

In 1985, I had the opportunity to ask John about it and his reply was that the director presumed it would take numerous shots before they could get it right. They booked a whole day to get the right shot for that scene. Amazingly, they got it perfect on the third take!

wow that is amazing. i never thought about it but ya today that shot probably would have been cgi. makes me appreciate the scene even more now.
