The Parks' Salmonfly is a classic adult Salmonfly (Giant Black Stonefly, Pteronarcys californica) pattern that still works like a charm anywhere in the West where Salmonflies live, especially rough water rivers like the Yellowstone, Gardner, and Gallatin, where it can be fished damp just subsurface to imitate egg laying stoneflies that have gotten swept underwater and drowned. Developed in 1954 as arguably the first Improved Sofa Pillow-type. Recipe at www.parksflyshop.com/flytying.htm

  • It's natural, actually hair from a couple different tails that have slightly different shades, amounts of waviness, etc., stacked together.

  • Is this Natural BuckTail or is dyed Gray?

  • The hackles will appear somewhat oversized in comparison to most contemporary flies. You're looking for feathers with barbs about 1.5x the gape. Richard tends to use furnace and brown interchangeably, usually furnace for the body hackle and brown for the head. Typically the bulk strung saddle he buys is brown, but some feathers turn out to be furnace.

  • What a classic fly. You can be sure I'll be floating this one when the hatch is on. Were all four of your hackles Brown and what size?
