In 1981, Sonia Umanzor, left El Salvador to escape persecution by paramilitary groups. She is nurse and attends Salvadoran immigrants in DC. Her everyday interactions with immigrants newly arrived from the perilous journey through Mexico and the U.S. Desert have convinced her that the increased militarization of the U.S. - Mexico border has created more pain and suffering.

  • Gracias para su trabajo, Sr. Umanzor. Fuerza!

  • Sonia embodies why we need to stay involved in closing the SOA/WHINSEC! Since 1982 when I took part in a march in Chicago from the Kyzcynski Federal Building to the Salvadoran Embassy, I have worked to bring justice in those situations Sonia experienced. At that time we protested the U.S.-funded war [to the tune of just $60 million then] that had, to that point, left 30,000 dead ["with no indictments"].

Thank you, Sonia, for your courageous work!
