@justrezzz: There are no basin-wide studies of the Omo-Gibe River Basin & virtually no understanding or appreciation of the basin's ecological functions, values, requirements, or effects on local livelihoods.

The fact that there has been no assessment of downstream impacts, e.g. environmental flow requirements, is a shocking example of Gibe III's non-compliance with recommendations of the World Commission on Dams (global multi-stakeholder body, initiated by World Bank & World Conservation Union)

It is interesting to hear and read point of views which are based on the usual Egyptian control of the Nile river and its tributaries. Egypt was doing this for centuries by colonizing regions up to present day Khartoum capital of Sudan. After that Egypt used her influence in World Bank & IMF to stop successive Ethiopian governments getting loan for tangible development loans. Ethiopia can't afford to worry about fragile ecosystems or minority groups that choose to remain in a primitive way of life, if it wants to provide prosperity for it's millions of poor people, which they can only achieve through modernity. The environmentalists should get out of Ethiopia's way and worry about the CO2 emissions in their own - developed - countries.

The dam is not going to divert the water to anywhere. So all this hand wringing is misguided at best, deceitful at worst,as it is in the case with some in Friends of Lake Turkuna who actualy represent the a wind power company, not the poor people in Kenya as they claim.

The claim that Gilgel Gibe III will hurt the locals down stream is not made in the interest of the Kenyan People.

The need for electricity & development is a valid point. But development for who? The dam threatens the food security of up to half a million people and would destroy the Omo valley environment with its great biodiversity.

Resettlements connected to the dam had already negative effects, placing hardships on people and compensation was completely insufficient.

Alternatives to the dam have surely not been considered due to business interests in the dam construction (Salini Construttori S.p.A.).

The making of the dam should continue to meet the great power deficit in Ethiopia. It would in addition be sold to Kenya and Sudan which would help fasten the development of the region one way or another!
