The Barren Islands, only 60 miles from Homer, Alaska and part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, are the largest seabird colony in the northern Gulf of Alaska. The Barrens are between the tip of the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak where strong currents merge creating severe tides and rich upwellings that provide plentiful food for all the diverse seabirds and marine mammals of the Barrens.
