I can't say 100% either way, but I'd be willing to bet that Hero was originally written by Phil with minimal help from Crosby around the time of Both Sides, and then given to Crosby to record for the Thousand Roads album. If you look at that album, almost every song is written by an outside writer. Also, this demo is pretty similar to the finished album version and sounds much closer to something Phil would write than something from Cros. That's my best guess anyway.
@haltdichfest I don't know either. I heard the duet version first, and mostly that was what the radio stations here in OKC played. It was in 1993. There is a video with David and Phil singing together, interspersed with a video of David playing a man being visited in jail by his son and wife. YouTube took it off of here about a year ago. I miss it. Very well done. What an underrated song. It is beautiful.
Both David Crosby and Phil Collins sing this tune very well!

This was a Crosby song orginally. Phil covered it. Though Phil did sing backup in the orginal Crosby version.

I don't know if this or the duet version with David Crosby was released first. Both versions are unique!
