See my #1 series of vids for a different and more effective style of sailing.
I recommend mastering all styles, but to get ult or #1, the style documented in this vid is not that effective. For duty puzzle competitions, which score maximum single league performance, elements of this style *might* be more helpful. (In contrast with rank, which scores average performance over a long, long, period.)
Note that the grapple at the end voids the interrupted combo -- I get no points :(.
thats one of the strangest techniques ive ever seen .but i wonder how u manage to keep sparkly.i have done vegas 4 or vegas 5 but my sparkly doesnt stay this long

If you post a vid I can analyze it. Probably 1) your combos are too small, or (perhaps) 2) you play too fast.
Explanation:
Not all V^4s are worth the same. Simultaneously clearing is a big deal. It means a higher percentage of *all* pieces played are participating in a big combo. Also it's worth a bonus, I think.
Fast play can result in `wavy' performance, rather than uniform performance, because combos have a finite lifetime. Shouldn't affect rank, but uniform is better for the ship.

I never really thought of sailing like that.
So, really, clearing the board is not worth anything, and just, well, clears the board?

Board clearing is not in and of itself a bonus. Of course you clear a platform when you do it, and platforms have bonuses.
You also get a new set of platforms, which enables more bonuses. The difficulty at 9* is dealing with obstacles on new boards efficiently (well enough that they don't countermand the platform bonuses). At the time of this video I couldn't do that.

Clearing boards isn't worth any points. Only combos/targets. Playing pieces costs points; maximizing points per clear means using every piece in a single combo. However, the goal of sailing is to maximize points over _time_.
That gives us two ways to sail:
fast, small, and clean
medium, big, and mildly wasteful
I disagree with conventional wisdom; I theorize:
1) Pieces are 'wasted' only when the board clears
2) It's okay to stop and think, as long as
average speed is high
