On Thursday July 14, 2011 — just the second day of Roger Clemens' perjury trial concerning steroid use — the judge has ordered a mistrial. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said prosecutors should have modified a video that showed Rep. Elijah Cummings during a 2008 congressional hearing talking about a deposition from the wife of former NY Yankees player Andy Pettitte.

Judge Walton said that jurors heard references to statements that the judge had ruled inadmissible except on rebuttal. Clemens, the 48-year-old legendary Red Sox and Yankees pitcher, was accused of perjury, obstruction of Congress and making false statements in 2008 about his alleged use of steroids.

The judge continued a gag order precluding Clemens, attorneys and prosecutors discussing the case — at least until a hearing on Sept. 2 to decide how or whether to jump start the case.
