Ten individuals from the campus and the Twin Cities participated in activities recognizing Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read at Illinois State Universitys Bone Student Center on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2. The event was free and open to the public.

Hosted by Milner Library and Barnes & Noble College Book Store.
National Banned Books Week (Sept. 26-Oct. 3), launched by the American Library Association in 1982, recognizes that intellectual freedom can exist only where the freedom to express oneself and the freedom to choose what opinions and viewpoints to consume are both met.

Excerpts from banned and challenged books are read by Illinois State faculty, staff and students, and community members. A brief introduction of the selected books covers the reasons why they have been banned or challenged.

  • I cannot refrain from expressing my sympathy for those who wanted to ban this story. It's a great tale, but if I had been forbidden to hear it in my youth it would have saved me many sleepless nights.

  • To this day I keep my hands and feet firmly tucked under the covers while I sleep. Lest something be tempted to scratch them off....
