In September 2009 nearly two feet of rain fell over the state of Georgia in less than 24 hours. The heavy rainfall spurred severe flash flooding that devastated some areas around Atlanta, damaging more than 20,000 homes. In some places water rose past the ceiling of the first floor. Unfortunately, since the flood rose to the 500 year flood plain most homes in the effected areas were not considered to be in a flood plain and did not have flood insurance. President Obama's disaster declaration allows federal aid to help affected families.
