Cantiga 282 "Par Deus, muit' á gran vertude"

Esta és de como Santa María socorrio a un niño de Segovia que cayó desde un sobrado muy alto, y no se hirió porque dijo: "Santa María, Váleme"

Para Dios hay un gran poder en la jaculatoria popular: "ay, Santa María, valedme" cuando se dice en cualquiera de las cuitas.

Porque es una gran virtud y piedad y merced socorrer sólo por una jaculatoria a quien cree mucho en Ella; porque, al estar con su Hijo, todo lo sabe y lo ve, por lo que a quien la invoca aquí no le falta su misericordia.

Y acerca de esto os contaré un milagro suyo muy hermoso que mostró con gran poder en Segovia, como pude comprobar en verdad, a un hijo de Diego Sánchez, un caballero que sé moraba en la ciudad y que de ella era natural.

Este tenía un hijo que amaba más que a sí mismo; y un día cuando estaba jugando, como supe, encima de un sobrado muy alto, cayó desde alli de espaldas, con la cabeza hacia abajo y fue a caer en la cal.

El ama que lo criaba acudió al ruido del golpe donde había caído el niño, e inmediatamente el padre; de igual modo la madre, quien lo amaba muy cordialmente, más que a otra cosa como hijo suyo que era.

Creyendo que estaba muerto, fueron a recogerlo. Pero cuando se dieron cuenta, lo vieron estar en pie jugando y riendo, y le preguntaron si estaba herido o se sentía mal.

El contestó: "No, porque al caer invoqué a la Madre de Dios, quien me acogió rápidamente en sus brazos; y si esto no hubiera sido así, os juro por San Mateo, que ahora estaría deshecho como la sal en el agua."

A man in Segovia named Diego Sánchez had a son whom he loved dearly.

One day the child was playing on the roof of a very high building.

He fell backwards and tumbled headlong into the street.

His nurse and his parents came running when they heard his cry.

Thinking that the child was dead, they ran to pick him up, but they found him playing and laughing. They asked him if he was injured and he assured them that he was fine because, as he was falling, he asked the Virgin to save him.

When his parents heard this, they praised the Virgin and took the boy to the cathedral to offer many candles.
