GM needs to make cars that people really wants. With rising gas prices, they were still pumping out big SUVs. OY!

With bankruptcy, GM and Chrysler are now on par or better vis-a-vis labor costs including legacy costs with the American plants of Honda and Toyota. All the issues you have brought up have now been wiped out. But they still have dramatically overpaid executives who like their Wall Street counterparts talk big about competition, then go running home to Mommy for a handout (read Corporate Welfare) from the working class taxpayers.

UNION Killed Them. They want contract salary increment, health care, pension and vacation. Do they care if this year the company is making money? And the pension , they get the pension till they or their spouse die, people live till 85 years old, they are getting the 65%+ of their last pay check for 20+ years. GM and Chrysler paying 6 person salary for 1 person to work. You can't really blame the management or those workers, it's the UNION.

GM is a dichotomy: It has been innovative with prototypes such as the EV1. It has also built some real dogs.
It is wrong to blame the Unions. The Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe are both built at the same plant in Fremont, CA by US workers. Several Honda and Toyota models are made in the US. Ultimately, GM was run by highly overpaid executives who just got too fat.
Hmm, this is sad news, I suppose...
BUT the new Nissan plant in St Petersburg is GOOD NEWS!
