I'm using my Larson Scanner hardware to show when FFmpeg is transcoding television shows I recorded over the air. I use the parallel port to trigger the device. It turns out that Python has a module that makes this easy. In the video I describe the hardware used (ATtiny13 and 595 shift registers), but there is more information available at my website:
