Paul Weyrich, "father" of the right-wing movement and co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, Moral Majority and various other groups tells his flock that he doesn't want people to vote. He complains that fellow Christians have "Goo-Goo Syndrome": Good Government. Classic clip from 1980. This guy still gives weekly strategy sessions to Republicans nowadays. The entire dialog from the clip:

"Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

  • I resent that these people are called Christians. They are the direct descendants of the Pharizees. Jesus was a champion of the little man, who said let's be nice to one another for a change. These people hate everything that isn't WASPy or evangelical.

  • Exactly. They do their best when only rich white men vote.

  • @Rockyj2 Yes it is... scary, I mean. Most of America, those who actually inhabit the 21st Century harbor no wish to travel back in time along with the tea partying "Christian" Right lunatics, but too many people are simply unaware of what's going on behind the scenes, politically speaking. Keep doing what you're doing... help get the youngsters involved. The old timers need young blood to help fight this scurge on democracy. Peace and thanks for posting this clip.

  • Well, at least he was honest about what he wanted.

  • @realbleamer because colored folks r 2 stupid to get ID to register

  • @karinkdf very scary. It amazes how they think they can take us back a 100 years!

Do they really believe youth born in the late & 21st Century want to go back 100 years?

  • P.S. to see what these lunatics are up to at present - politically speaking - see People for the American Way at rightwingwatch(dot)org - current news and video.

  • @YourAnnoying You're annoying alright. Check out the entire video produced by People for the American Way in 1982 and narrated by Burt Lancaster at theocracywatch(dot)org for free (scroll menu to "download materials") and get an eyeful. These are the people now running the GOP's tea party.

  • "IT'S OUR OBLIGATION!" A 65 year old disabled Vietnam Veteran called in, (protesting the republicans voter suppression efforts.) Said "I didn't need a stinking Photo ID in order to vote, before leaving a piece of myself in Vietnam, while fighting for our rights. And no one better dare ask me for it NOW!" When Thom Hartmann thanked him for his service and his courage for standing up for our rights. The Veteran responded "STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHTS DOESN'T REQUIRE COURAGE, IT'S OUR OBLIGATION!"
