Depression is the fourth most important cause of disability worldwide -- and is expected to become the second most important by 2020.
Statistics suggest that as many as 1 in 3 of us might experience depressive symptoms during our lifetime and women are twice as likely to be affected as men. Depression is a major problem and treating depression a major drain on medical resources.
Now, new studies in the southwest of England are looking into different approaches to the treatment of depression -- approaches that may have a significant impact on this debilitating illness.
Bringing together expertise in Psychiatry, Exercise Psychology, Health Economics and Primary Care, a collaboration of the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter and the Peninsula Medical School will conduct one of the largest studies in the world, into the use of exercise as a treatment for depression.
Meanwhile, a parallel study at the University of Bristol will examine patient DNA believing that this may hold the key to more accurate drug prescription -- matching patients to their medication according to their own genetic make-up.
In the UK alone, depression costs the Health Service some £80 million a year in antidepressant prescriptions. The benefits of exercise and more accurately targeted medication could make a considerable contribution to the treatment of depression throughout the world.

  • That was so true for me. I mean it was AMAZING how excercise for ME anyway absolutely no questions seriously made me feel so so much better. That and SOME self help stuff (like Tony Robbins very practical excercises fro generating good emotions, see also NLP).

  • Its so true. Also I have just moved from the town into the country. I am surrounded by trees and nature. It's made me realise the real cost of "progress" it is worth so much more than a 42 inch plasma and all the other gizmos we are ruining our enviornment and spending our time to get. A new car every year a new phone every year designer clothes it is all B.S we don't need it and it only makes you happy for about 5 minutes.

  • Do yoga and tai chi but make sure you tell the teacher about your injury and take it very easy in class with the yoga you wont have to worry about an injury from tai chi. You will probably find the yoga will help your back It helped mine and a friend of mine with our back problems.

  • Cycling,walking..basically any physical excercise. And a good diet with omega3 can really help fight off depression.

alcohol and other drugs can make a person depressed..i believe all anti-depressants are a waste of time AND money.

    good video.

  • forget antidepressants. i was on paxil for a while and it never helped much. exercising regularly will eventually get you where you want to be

  • Depending on your cause and severity of depression, excercise is not a cure-all. I've suffered from depression all my life. And in my younger years, I was a bit obsessive about my looks and excercised all the time. Didn't help...

  • If you have a chronic lower back injury that makes every exercize hurt. If you have arthritis and leg damage from an accident. Exercize? Run, jog, walk briskly for 30 min. It depresses me that I can't without debilitating pain that lingers for weeks.

  • I think this man on the video never suffered from depression.

  • well its cos of a mix of factors, but exercise always helps. all those endorphins! and i guess it keeps you busy as well.
