Egypt v Algeria: why World Cup play-off is football's most explosive match
Egypt and Algeria go head-to-head for the final African qualifying place for next years World Cup finals in South Africa with concerns over fan behaviour and player safety in a highly charged atmosphere for the second time in a week.
It did. The final group game of African qualifying saw Algeria travel to Cairo as leaders needing only to win, draw or even lose by a single goal to get to the finals for the first time since 1986. Egypt needed a three goal winning margin to see them come top on goal difference.
So, what happened?
The game went in to stoppage time with Egypt 1-0 up before, in the 95th minute, Emad Moteab scored a header to make it 2-0. The result meant that the two rivals finished with identical records and so have to play a one-off, sudden-death play-off on a neutral ground, in Khartoum, Sudan on Wednesday.
They must be getting sick of the sight of each other.
Thats an understatement. This fixture is one of the most combustible and tension laden in world football. Algerias team bus was pelted with stones when it made its way from the airport to the team hotel in Cairo, with some of the players and staff suffering cuts and bruises. And there was trouble before, during and after the game in Egypt, Algeria and even France.
So why all the bad blood?
It goes back a long way. Even in the 50s when many African countries, but not Egypt, were struggling for independence Algeria took exception when Egypt refused to play a team of top players who had returned from France to highlight the Algerian plight. In the 1970s Algerian police got heavy handed with supporters and players in a match between Libya and Egypt in Algeria.
So a bit of previous then, eh?
That was only the start. The real animosity centres on a match in Egypt in 1989, exactly 20 years ago today. Like this weeks matches, World Cup qualification was at stake, Egypt needing to draw or win to reach Italia 90. They won 1-0, through a Hossam Hassan goal and all hell broke lose.
Algeria blamed a corrupt referee and after the game Lakhdar Belloumi, an Algerian, even African, legend for scoring the winning goal against West Germany at the 1982 World Cup, is said to have bottled an Egyptian team doctor, blinding him in one eye. The Egyptians tried and convicted him in his absence, handing down a jail term to be served in Egypt.
So he actually went to prison in Egypt? That doesnt sound like fun.
No. But he has been effectively been unable to leave Algeria since. Belloumi was only pardoned this year when the two teams were drawn together in World Cup qualifying, in an act of diplomacy, but it has done little to quell the disquiet. Even last year Hassan and his brother Ibrahim were banned by Fifa for the behaviour of the club they coach together, Masri, after they lost a match in Algeria. Ibrahim assaulted the fourth official and was unrepentant, saying: I will not apologise. I do not regret my actions."
So what can we expect from the match in Sudan?
Thousands of fans from both countries, including workers who live in Khartoum, are already gathering for the match and there is a fear that the local police, despite 15,000 of them being posted at the game, wont have the experience to manage a volatile situation like this.
No, I mean the football, who is going to make it over the line?
Anybodys guess. Algeria have played some good stuff this campaign and are desperate to reach a first finals since 1986. They beat Egypt 3-1 at home and were seconds away from restricting them to 1-0 in Cairo before the late goal. Egypt have the pedigree and are the strongest side in Africa but this is a one off. Its up for grabs.
All Egyptian men should go home and starting doing the dishes from now on.
The Algerians emasculated the lot of you, on and off the pitch.
Watching the Egyptians in Sudan, one could not help but feel sorry for them, they were all hiding behind the Sudanese police, after all the insults and threats they made.
Most of the Egyptian women came just by watching Algerian men, they never saw real men before and hence never had a proper orgasm
Long live Algeria, the land of men with brass balls!!
