Ford's New Smart Intersection "Talks" To Cars

Ford researchers unveiled one of the first privately funded "smart intersections" in North America, a key step toward leveraging GPS technology and wireless infrastructure-to-vehicle communications to reduce traffic accidents and ease congestion. The smart intersection, established near Ford's Research & Innovation Center in Dearborn, communicates with specially equipped test vehicles to warn drivers of potentially dangerous traffic situations. @thetalloneIV well... for one... don't pretend to know me. I use voice texting anyway... that is still using the phone while driving. is it not? and the roads are unsafe because of old people, young people, middle aged people, people who smoke, people who put makeup on in the mirror, people who don't get enough sleep, blind people, pedestrians, animals... but i dont see any of that stuff being banned??!?!?

@tighmir Oh how wrong you are! You CANNOT drive properly while using a phone. MANY research studies have shown (most conducted at the university I go to, in fact) that you are just as inhibited while using a cell phone as you are when you're drunk. You may think it doesn't affect your driving & that you're a terrific multi-tasker, but the odds are that you're not. Most people aren't. It's people like you that use their cell phones that make the roads unsafe.

the video is not just about texting and driving or inattentive driving... its about people falling asleep... or people managing their passengers also... that was an example to show what kinds of things people do. So, with that said, stop being so hard on people... you can drive properly while using a phone.

WTF? This is the equivalent of breaking someone's arm so they won't notice their broken leg. The root of the problem is morons on thier cell phones. There is no self discipline anymore, when driving cell phones should be reserved for emergencies only. Sadly, because morons seem to make up the majority of the nation, the only way many areas have found to prevent stupid people from mis-using thier cell phone while driving is to put a ticket enforced ban on using them at all while driving.

This video has given me a better idea for an invention.

There's a sensor in your dashboard. If at any time it detects cell-phone activity in the driver seat while the car is in motion, a boxing glove shoots out of the steering wheel and punches the driver in the face.

This would be very annoying. I can understand maybe if it somehow could make corrections. Like if you accidentally made a right turn on a red light when a sign said not to... and then have the lady get pissed off.. that'd be amusing haha.
