Motor racing is a popular sport here and many of the carmakers exposed on this market are closely involved in all manner of forms of racing. Since I have been in Bangkok I have caught the last three rounds of the Thai Super Car championship as well as the final round of the Pattaya Pro Racing Series a couple of weeks ago and many of machines that have been plying their trade in either or both series are on show at the 29th Bangkok Motor Expo 2009 this week, mostly displaying their series decals, racing numbers as well as a few dents.

The dramatic Thai Super Car championship is the bill topper in Thailand; these outrageous cars are firm favorites with the crowds as they howl their way round the tracks festooned with impressive looking aerodynamic appendages. Split into classes for turbo and non-turbo runners, the Super Cars were in action in their final double header round of the year at the Bangsaen Thailand Speed Festival 2009 just last weekend and several are on show in the motorsport-dedicated section nestling at one end of the Impact Arena's open plan Challenger hall. These include the red-and-white BMW silhouette racer that rejoined the Thai Super Car series at Bangsaen without too much success although it is complete with a trophy earned during the opening round of the series earlier this year so it must have a handy turn of speed. Also in this paddock is the white #4 Lexus that is driven by Kahjohnsak, it collected a handy fourth place in the first race last weekend, but dropped out early in the final encounter. The pick-up trucks that always pump clouds black fumes behind them whenever they open their throttles in the supporting Super Commonrail series are here as well, with a pair of red-and-silver Mitsubishis sitting side-by-side. Also in the racing paddock is the pretty Super 2000 VW Golf that was driven on the seaside street circuit by Jakthong.

Singha is synonymous with racing in Thailand, most cars seem to carry their gold decals somewhere on their flanks and the national beer brewer has a dedicated stand at the show, where two Thai Super Car Mitsubishi Evos, the blue-and-white #4 machine of drifting legend Gigi, and the silver #81 example of his team mate Voravut are on show, both cars fresh from the action in Bangsaen, the latter bearing plenty of battle scars in the shape of broke composite materials. The arrive at the show off the back of a strong 3-4 finish respectively in the final round of the year at the street race last Sunday, with Gigi edging out his team mate. In fact his other mount, his also blue-and-white PTT-sponsored drift car is on show in the motorsports section, along with another of these tyre-smoking machine, the police car style pick up that thrilled the Bangsaen crowds as the light fell. Completing the motorsport theme on the Singha stand is an inshore-powerboat and a full-size F1 simulator based around Sebastien Vettels Red Bull grand prix single-seater.

The two pretty yellow-and-grey #58 and #59 Proton Neo racers that I saw in action during the final round of the Pattaya Pro Racing Series two-and-a-half weeks ago are here on the Proton stand where they are taking centre stage, and judging by the very well-stocked trophy cabinet behind them, they have enjoyed their fair share of victories. Rallying meanwhile is represented by a Suzuki Swift, the bright yellow little hatchback has enjoyed huge success in recent years in the hands of youngsters earning their stripes in the Junior World Rally Championship. The Honda stand also has a couple grass-roots racing cars, with a Jazz and Civic, both drawn from one-make series', being on show.
