World's First Beatboxing Champion in 1938

This video is taken from the British Pathe newsreel "The Radio Revellers" and is a song called 'There's A Tavern In The Town'. You can watch the video of the whole song here:

And yes, for those of you who were wondering, this isn't actually "beatboxing" strictly. The singer is doing an impersonation of a "big string bass" - Still, it's pretty impressive and a prototype of beat boxing.

The world famous beatboxer Rahzel shared some insight on this video which you can read on our blog here:

I still say it's cello, even if you remove my comments :D (not sure why you would do that, though)

Yes you're quite correct. The gentleman is in fact impersonating a "big string bass" - If you see the information below the video there's a link to the full length video. Enjoy!

If you see the information we've just added you can watch the original video. It is from 1938, it's a famous band from that period called The Radio Revellers.

By the way Martin, i'm a bit confused. The band members in Radio Revellers were Art Reed, Al Fearnhead, Stan Emery and Freddie Holmes. I know grandad was in another band before called The Four Crotchets. Thought this was RR.

Hello to Megan and Martin. I am Art Reeds grandaughter. It was a real surprise to find this on here. And by the way, to an earlier post - these guys were NOT middle class toffs. My grandad was born and raised in the EastEnd!
