What plenitude of light lies in the shadow!
Warbling, the bird shows within the radiance

Its coral face like an angelical dove.

Like a cherub in the ecstasy of the lotus.
What fragrant aroma on the hill!

The green grass, fresh and moist
And the chalice of the earth overflow

Onto the slope that rests in the light.
All is ready for the intoxicated course

Of light and song and aroma...
On the slope my breast is restored

In the subtle ecstasy of the poppy
My eye looks at the sun and it hoists

The luminous honeycomb of Borinquen ...

And from the chalice of the land drinks the nectar
Of the dovecote which it swings from the shadow.
