Try using the Option key (on Mac) or the Alt key (on PC) to switch between the additive and subtractive modes, it's much faster!

Great tutorial... One of the best I've seen on how to quickly remove a background using Quick Select and Refine Edge in Photoshop CS5. Simple to follow but you go pretty deep into the features.

good video dude. Is there a way to do this technique and save the cropped image as a jpeg without a background. I need to insert it to a illustrator document.

@redXsketch There is an option in the refine edge window to save to a separate file, but jpeg won't save with a transparent background, so you would be better to save in .png or .psd format, which both work fine with illustrator.
