Reposted are more highlights from my "NightLife Show" which ran on local cable TV in FL from 1980-1986. This condensed episode features a look at the beginnings of audio compact discs and video laser discs (which later evolved into DVDs). Kerry explains the process behind audio CDs and then Ray Glasser in Cleveland, OH shows the technology behind the original video laser discs. This 1985 program also shows the Magnavox laser disc player. At the time, this was all-new technology that would take over analog records and video tapes.

  • That was very interesting. Where the laser discs really ok with scratches, or was that just a misconception?

  • I never really had a problem with scratches, but I was very careful with them. Probably the same as modern DVDs.

  • The video has gone beyond 332 views at last. I wonder if the counter is actually working now???

  • Yes...counter working again. I have a small note attached from YouTube saying because my video is so popular (?????) that my hits are delayed. Hmm, I don't know.

  • Kerry, are you planning to upload this particular video to your back up channel?

  • I have a few more videos to put up right away on this channel first, then I'll decide on my alternate KKD1247a channel. Since I'm hoping I'll not need it, I may only put speical anniversary shows etc for starters.

  • He's walking backwards! lol

  • You can never replace LP's

  • I'm wanting a laser disc player simple because I like old things and it's nice to take a trip back in time. From what i understand the quality is better than vhs.

  • @MalkavianMadness how about that. I also heard that placing labels, or placing labels inappropriately onto discs also damage them somehow.

clearly no media is scratch proof by the way!

  • @AccordionManiac The danger with cd's and Dvd's is actually making scratches on the labeled side rather then the read side.I dont know for sure if this is true for all optical formats but I tried it with a dvd, as soon as you scratch the label the reflective coating will be gone and the laser will shine right trough.

  • I owned and operated a home entertainment center from 1968 tp 1992 and went through the CD and VLD era and couldn't get anyone to even try a CD audio player. I finally took a player and some popular music to a local radio station and hooked it up to their audio board and they announced over the air the music they was playing was coming from a CD! I gave the station 2 players to use on air with the stipulation that we would be mentioned from time to time and they began selling.

  • Wow and now I have a samsung blu ray player on a toshiba 1080p 120hz 46" LCD HDTV and the features are way better. Bd live for example. I just love how technology has come such a long way!!!

  • are you able to upload a full episode? i really enjoyed this
