To those saying the south was defeated horribly, consider the following, the south never lost until Gettysburg, and they still had victories after and look at Col. Watie out West who was infact winning his own war in 1861 A LOT more people oij the north died than in the south and its pathetic becouse with their numbers they should've stomped the south in a matter of months.

Lincoln freed the slaves as a political move to make himself look better and so that the North had a more legitimate excuse to fight. The war began NOT over slavery. Sure, there was a large anti-slavery sentiment in the north but Lincoln freed the slaves later in the war. The war was not over slavery but over state's rights to secede (Which they had). I am a Northerner (From Indiana) and I support the South 100%. They had every right to secede.

And furthermore if the United States was split up then it wouldn't be as powerful as it is now. People should think before speaking. Not to mention the North is where the steel is made and where the most of the money was. There was no time where the South had more power. The Union won most of the battles therefore they won.
