Either that or timing chain slap. I'm going to probably replace the tensioner to see if it helps.

  • I still would like to eliminate that noise so I wouldn't have to explain it to non-///M people why my engine isn't broken! Since it is only on one side, I know it could be fixed. I've looked at the drvanos spline gear mod, but some report mixed success.

  • I always use Castrol TWS 10W-60 on my 2002 M5, buy the noise is still there. I'm thinking about checking out my timing chain guides for wear. Short of that, I just have a bad left side VANOS. I've replaced the timing chain tensioner and vanos solenoid seals, and they didn't change anything.

  • That noise is due to the splined gears that fit at the back of the vanos. Its the bearings inside the gears that cause the diesel rattle. It does not effect engine performance and is not a sign of the vanos failing.

  • use proper castral 10w60 (M oil) it made less noise. the e60 m5 sounds worse.

  • my 2001 m5 made the same excact noise ended up being a bad vanos system...get it fix quick to avoid black smoke coming out the mufflers.
