The Bohr effect is a part of oxygen transport. The Bohr effect works well in healthy people. Dr. Buteyko found that people with heart disease, diabetes and many other problems suffer from low cells oxygenation due to the reduced Bohr effect caused by their deep breathing. This effect explains why sick people breathe more air (hyperventilation), but have less oxygen delivered to their cells of all vital organs.

Oxygen transport depends on CO2 level in tissues and when sick people have heavy breathing problems or ineffective breathing pattern, they get less O2 for cells.

For these varieties of respiration (irregular and ineffective breath patterns), people breathe a lot more when compared to the physiological norm (chronic deep breathing). The scientific norm is about 6 Liters of air in a single min at rest. This is a minuscule amount of air. Actually, it is so small that healthy people usually do not sense their respiration.

During overbreathing, we reduce the amount of CO2 in the arterial blood. This ingredient is a dilator of blood vessels and is irreplaceable for transport of oxygen to vital organs (the Bohr effect).

As a result, oxygen has higher affinity to red blood cells and red blood cells cannot release required amounts of oxygen in tissues of all vital organs.

Consequently, the ineffective respiration pattern (deep breathing) results in cells hypoxia or deficiency of oxygen. Development of all chronic diseases, such as diabetes, epilepsy, arthritis, mental problems, COPD, asthma, cancer, CFS, migraine, heart disease and many others is primarily based on hypoxia that is due to suppressed Bohr effect and spasm of blood vessels.

Hence, when people learn the Buteyko method (how to breathe less), or Oxygen Remedy, or practice breathing exercises with the Frolov breathing device, they get more oxygen for their bodies due to normal Bohr effect and vasodilation.

  • A bit difficult to understand but good video.

    At :29 "when exercise I don't carbohydrate.

When I don't carbohydrate there are two end products."

What is this supposed to mean, when I don't carbohydrate?

  • @johnlvs2run

    "when exercise I BURN carbohydrates".
