"Doin' the Raccoon"
Jesse Stafford Orchestra
Clyde Lucas, Vocal
Recorded Nov. 16, 1928
Brunswick 4129

Words: Raymond Klages
Music: J. Fred Coots

Personnel:
Joseph Nemoli , cornet
Jesse Stafford, trombone, leader
Clyde Lucas, trombone, vocal
Gene Rose, reeds
Fred Bibesheimer, reeds
Unknown, piano
Jose Secudo, banjo
Guy Wiedoeft, tuba
Adolph Wiedoeft, drums

Eveybody has their favorite version of "Doin' the Racoon". George Olson recorded it about a month earlier and his rendition is probably the best known. However I have always liked the Jesse Stafford arrangement best, especially the strong tuba bass/rhythm and Clyde Lucas' vocal chorus.

  • Sorry, I don't have that one. If you're referring to the 1937 Decca recording... that's a very rare 78. I think it was reissued on LP vinyl in the 1970s, but I don't think it's currently available on CD.

  • Thank you bsgs98, what a great version, gives George Olsen more than a run for his money!

Loved the strong bounce, the tuba, the reeds and the vocal. Your pictures are brilliant seen in High Quality - the first such posting I've had no sound problems.

  • Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. This was one of the first 78s that I bought when I started collecting over 40 years ago. So it's always been one of my favorites.

  • By a very happy coincidence (or was it that a VIP was reading us?)I find that this version now appears on the marvelous Red Hot Jazz website in YELLOW (free listen/download)! Also "Dust" by JS, a number recently posted twice on YT.

  • In case you didn't know, the reverse side of this record was "Gloriana" another great 20s tune by Jesse Stafford. It can be found elsewhere on YouTube, posted by user 240252.

  • I`m very blessed to own a copie of this AWESOME record! This is My favorit version. LOVE this video.

  • do you happen to have Girl of my Dreams by the Casa Loma Orchestra in your collection?

  • bsgs98, thank you, I like "Glorianna" very much. I counted, there are no less than 37 Jesse Stafford recordings to hear/download on the RHJ website from '28 to '31. I prefer the earlier '28/29 ones as being more 'peppy'. Sorry to say my 78 collection only gathers dust these days.

  • thanks for the post, we now have all the major record labels versions except Columbia. I'll get it posted unless someone beats me to it.
