  • David Lean was a sophisticated gentleman. Spielberg is merely an overgrown, talented schoolboy. Luckily for Spielberg there are more overgrown schoolboys in audiences nowadays than there were when Mr Lean was making films. Otherwise no-one would bother to watch his childish films.

  • I feel the same way about Spielberg, but at least he did give Lean his due credit, saying that Lawrence of Arabia inspired him to become a director, and later offering to fund Lean's failed Nostromo project, when they started to disagree over it.

  • He was still editing like this in the 80s?

  • He supposedly got tired of people getting credit for work that he felt he had done, and he made sure he got credit for editing this, but told the assistant editor that she would get "a jolly good credit", and he apparently felt bad about it and sent her some expensive china for her wedding when she would not talk to him after this. She later said that she remembered him fondly every time she saw the china.

  • Passage to India

  • Brilliant! 'to hell with the photography, it was the cutter!' Seeing his films it is quite true I think. Where is this from? Is it possible to see some more of where this came from? that would be splendid..

  • It is from an interview on the southbank show that was broadcast on A&E. There is a little bit more showing him directing Passage to India on the program, but not much.

I am glad you liked it.
