The second track from Audio Soul Project's "High Off The People" release is the spiritual "Song For Fred". The twelve minute plus trip is a musical ode to Fred Hampton, the former leader of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party. Here, Mazi pays tribute to a figure who has clearly captured his imagination. The song is deceptively simple and repetitive. A shuffling lo-fi drum track and a sub bass bump are all that underpin the evolving piano and synth keyboards; it's the kind of workout that strikes a meditative mood while shaking ones hips. The music, simple loops, and dramatic breakdowns evoke a sense of discovery reminiscent of "Morning Factory" by Ron Trent. After eight minutes of ebb and flow the track grandly breaks down into a speech by Hampton where the man elaborates on the purpose of his life and his hope that others can share his revolutionary spirit. This is heavy stuff to be sure but no one says dance music has to always stay on the surface. If they do, Fresh Meat is not listening.
