I'd been working on the transcription of the intro for this great Dire Straits song for a while, trying to get better at using the re-entrant string.
I took the song along to a 'Toads' band rehearsal which got Jon (usual singer) working on his finger picking!

Consequently we got together to do this recording!

This song has a bit dedication (if I was younger and cooler I'd say a 'shout-out!') to my good mate MrW. When we were growing up together he was massively into Dire Straits and got me onto them.

I still think 'Brothers in Arms' is one of their best albums, apart from the two 'notorious' singles off it perhaps!

And for those interested the ukulele is a brand new, cheap and cheerful, Tenor Makala that I think is incredible value for money. I didn't even change the strings or owt, sounds okay. Little intonation issues perhaps, but for the money a value instrument - go try it!

  • Well, managed to work out my own version, took a bit of figuring out but got there in the end, was good practice for me!

I think I might perform the song at my uke club, partly using your version as inspiration.

  • @jhob101 You Must! And nice one, well done. Now, about your video of it....?! ;o) Best wishes.

  • If you've got the tab for the intro that would be sweet! Just been trying to work it out myself and struggling, that's how I came by your video!

  • @jhob101 Hey, thanks for the comment. I 'arranged' it myself to be honest (I presume you mean the Uke part?!) so just followed the original Dm version from the keyboard. But I found that if you use the re-entrant system (ie use the G string against the A) then it works better and lies quite comfortably in the intro. Sorry to be so vague, but never got round to tabbing it as its been dropped from the band set as well! Bit depressing for a gig night! LOL!

  • Loving The Dire Strauts cover. Brothers in Arms was one of my face albums of the 80s...

  • @Rushbo1 well thank you! I like Dire Strauts as well LOL!

  • Yes, I should post more videos! And, promise that I will - I blame my toddling daughter for a lack of time!
