  • @ratman396 This is the reason why we have to build a certain amount of Naval ships every year. We have to maintain the institutional capability to make them. We no longer have any of that institutional capability to make a Battleship. As a matter of fact, we no longer have the ability to make the class A armor the Battleships have. Pretty sad. In many ways the downfall of this ability mimics Detroit and auto makers. We brought it on ourselves.

  • @ratman396 There are so many issues against the recommissioning of two of the Iowa BB's, that we will never see them on the oceans again. One big issue that was not there in 1992, was this: WOMEN ON COMBATANT SHIPS. Thanks to political correctness, it would cost millions just to make them "gender neutral". But, aside from all the bullshit, we lost one big item... Corporate memory. Almost all the people who built them, are dead. We no longer have the memory to build one.

  • @ratman396 It's not possible. I volunteer on the Missouri for her upkeep once a year for two weeks at Pearl, and am still in the Navy. We no longer have the infrastructure to get even one of the Iowa class BB's back in the fleet. Even if we were to cannibalize the other 3, it still would not be enough. Then there is one other issue: Her crew. She was decom'd in 1992. Thats 20 years ago. We would have to recall retirees to crew, and train other Sailors on her systems.

  • Who thinks we need to put this grand lady back into service and take her for a little cruise....right up the Strait of Hormuz!

  • @LadySierraSays I took the Ferry Boat from Seattle (early 80s) one day to go see Mighty Mo in retirement, in Bremerton - walked from the Bremerton Ferry Boat Dock and back, no cars, no people. Walked around on Mo . . . no other people. It was truly awesome. She was very clean and well maintained - the Oak trim sparkled.

  • Dear Santa...
