Some can really make something of themselves - more that the parts add up to. Mae was one of those, that light their own way. Even today, where her looks, shape and style is more caricature - she pulls it off. Eighty years later, we still fall for Mae. Her wit, personality and panache make her beautiful and desirable.
(sorta like Queen Latifa. Who would expect her to be a star - yet she wills herself to be one, and it works)
