The passenger ship, 'SS Yongala', sank off Cape Bowling Green, on 23 March 1911. En route from Melbourne to Cairns she steamed into a cyclone and sank without a trace south of Townsville, Australia. The actual cause of the wrecking remains a mystery./nOne hundred and twenty-two people perished in what was considered one of the most tragic incidents in Australian maritime history. There were no survivors. It was only in 1958 that the wreck of the Yongala was discovered lying in northern waters south of Townsville and has since become renowned as an internationally regarded diving and tourist destination.

  • I have had 3 livaboard trips to the Yongala with Mike Ball, 2 on waters sport and 1 on spoil sport and we were always told to treat it as a grave and do not pnetrate the wreck. Seen a few videos on youtude with divers inside the wreck :-( Oh and I do remember the swales getting back onboard water sport.... I notice that Mike Ball has sold the shop and water sport in Townsville?

  • When was this? What year?

  • 1988 no known restrictions by Mike Balls watersports. Perhaps that has changed now I do not know.

  • Thank you, for this wonderful visit to the SS Yongala. This is the grave site of my Grandfather Arthur Armstrong, who was a member of the crew, when the ship sank during 23 March 1911.
