Excerpts from Matt Smith's critically praised 2004 debut album.
Matt Smith Quartet, Cristian Soleanu, George Dumitriu, Vlaicu Golcea.

Matt Smith recorded these tracks early July 2004, in Bucharest, Romania. He was 14 years old. Matt had already formed his own jazz group at the Green Hours Club, Romania's most famous jazz venue, and performed his debut at age 12 on Romanian National Television. Matt started listening to John Coltrane and Miles Davis seriously just before studying with his percussion mentor, the celebrated Bucharest set player Vlad Popescu. When given the opportunity to record, Matt wanted to use the late Coltrane period to explore the drumming of Elvin Jones and especially Rashied Ali. In early 2005, Ali heard Matt's version of Expression and was impressed enough to call him. A friendly association soon developed that took hold during Matt's time in Flint, Michigan.

  • bine Georgica,s-o tii tot asa!Bravo!

  • Great music from this kid.

  • Amazing!

  • hey matt, i wish i was as sweet as you when i was 14. youre really lucky to have discovered and Appreciated late coltrane. its not for the unintiated... as hendrix would say, 'you definitely experienced brother'. keep it up man, and don't let the novelty of your age stop your growth man, just stay focused and learn to grow inside and keep playing. your chops are solid...i hope you stay good and growing and never get complacent man. and your making music for me. carry that torch!

  • Despite the lie that would be told by somebody later, if you don't reveal this was a kid doing this and putting it all together nobody would ever know. I'd rather listen to this than the Tony Royster circus show any day.

  • This is much more impressive than some 14 year old chops kid webz hero thrashing about. This demostrates depth and maturity that you don't see in kids this age.

  • Great group, Matt. You compliment each other's instruments well. Thanks for the post. ck

  • Great stuff Matt. Thanks for posting this. -DB
