U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson implores lawmakers to pass a ban on Burmese pythons. More
than 100,000 of the dangerous snakes, like the 16-foot one on the table in front of Nelson, have
infested the Florida Everglades. The snake weighed over 150 pounds when it was
captured along a canal in Miami-Dade County. Last week, a pet python killed a
two-year-old girl in Central Florida.

  • There is NO documentation that any person has EVER released a burmese python into the ENP. Just ask the ENP employees! But Hurrican Andrew dumped THOUSANDS into the ENP. Adding the 9 snakes to the Lacey Act will have ZERO effect on the ENP. It will:

-bankrupt tens of thousands of US citizens

-make it a felony to move from one state to another with a pet

-destroy a $3 billion reptile industry as boas & pythons represent 1/3 of the industry

-Show you support the extremists in the HSUS

  • last day to call in for HR2811!!!! call now, fax, email! Everything! and you shouldn't penilize everyone because a few irresponsible, ignorant keepers let their snakes get out.

  • Did someone ever explain that this snake does not have fangs but has rows of teeth. Why don't they talk about the iresponsable owner of that owned that snake. didn't have it housed right, wasn't feeding properly. The guys mom even offered to keep it at her house. Why don't he explain that alot of these are not escaped or release pets. 7 people died from an attack, what about the 100s of dog attacks. Why are we not banning them

  • What a liar. This is based on such awful "science." They need moist, humid, HOT climates. These animals will absolutely NOT survive north of southern FL. This ban will not solve the problem; a problem that should only be dealt with IN FLORIDA. Also, as far as these animals being dangerous...look up the astounding number of dog bite fatalities per year (as opposed to 17 supposed python-related deaths in 10 years). Imagine the outrage if someone suggested a nationwide dog ban...

  • Non native speaices.. Cats are not native and we have them all over the world. dog as well !!

  • Banning these animals nation wide isnt the right thing to do its taking our freedom away.and its gonna hurt our ecconamy the best thing to do is to have aopen season on the burmese pythons have rewards for every catch.Coz the ban wont make the burmese stop mateing and it wont make them dissapear. its just gonna anger alot of people.

  • People do buy these animals as babys and think they will grow to their cage size but thats not true. and its not because of people letting them go its because of hurricanes in florida the pet stores should make sure they surcure the animals they sell in a tubs and tape them down tightly so the animal cant get out. they should realy perpair for the storms they have in florida so the problem wont get wrose.

  • I love my animals like family and I am not willing to let them go because of some stupid law that was over seen by our goverment. Last I heard was this is the land of the free the best place to live. But now I am not so sure about that anymore. Id leave the countery before id give my pets up. and about the pyhon that attacked the baby, it was under weight for its size and more then likely didnt have a propuer cage .

  • These old farts know nothing of what a burmese python truely needs to survive. all they know is that they have a problem in florida. I own and breed these animals and I live in Missouri we had a horribale ice storm in 2008 and meny people in the state on missouri lost their snakes due to the cold .I am also wanting to move to Cailifornia to be with a man that i love but wont be able to take my pets/ breeders with me.

  • FUCK ALL OF YOU POLITICS

  • Oh right OK, because an animal is strong an is camouflaged it is somehow evil and needs to be slaughtered?

  • Interesting how he's not complaining about all the Alligators in the Everglades that have hurt people and their pets, just in banning these constrictors. This past year alot of states saw record numbers of Copperhead bites, yet he wants to ban these non-venomous snakes because of 4 or 5 alleged incidents. He's nuts!

The answer to the problem in the everglades is pretty simple; spay and neuter the feral ones that aren't tame enough to keep in captivity.
