Here is the lecture that is making a little stir by Phil Johnson called "Sound Doctrine; Sound Words". He gave this at the 2009 Shepherd's Conference. While this lecture does touch on certain problems in evangelicalism naming them specifically, that's not the reason this lecture has impressed upon me so much although I do agree with him that all of the examples he provided have no place in church. What made this so important to me was the exegesis he offered as to why not only sound doctrine but also sound speech, behavior, etc. is taken on by him and many others (including the Apostle Paul as Phil demonstrates) as something that should not be taken lightly in regard to ourselves, our relationship to others and, our relationship to God. Before this, I knew that the Scriptures tell us to have standards to conduct ourselves by as servants of God, but I had never heard it delivered in such a concise and lucid way as Phil has here. That's the main reason I asked Phil if I could post it here and share it with the rest of you. I believe that this lecture is one of the utmost importance especially considering the rise of immaturity that has arisen as of late in the name of "evangelicalism", "contextualization", and "missional outreach". Listening to this in its entirety well worth an hour spent. It provides a good basis for arguing that right doctrine isn't always the only thing that is needed in the life of the Christian. After all, Satan and his demons have the doctrines down, and angels of light have their "statements of faith" lined up with Scripture, too.

Thanks to Phil Johnson for allowing me to post this here.

  • In his introduction, did he exclude himself from evangelicals?

  • We did a show on your question. It's on this account. It's called Rightly Divided episode 2.

  • Does anyone else find it ironic that a pre-millenial, adult baptism advocate, non-denominational Calvinist (that is ironic in itself!) is lecturing on doctrine?!

  • My favorite part of this video is his list of words describing all of how mark driscoll talks about filthy stuff. tasteless, inappropriate, leciviousness, immoral, sexual, sensual, perverse, pornographic, graphic, shameful, course, vile, off limits, disgusting, lustful, trashy, smutty, filthy, eroticism, and more. All these words roll off the tongue nicely!

  • @firenutz698 he probably doesn't

  • I wonder how this guy preaches Song of Songs

  • Phil Johnson hit a homerun. Right on target.

  • Well said

  • @breith76 ......Licence to live as you please just like anyone else. No cost, no change of life, & no standard!

  • legalism at is finest.

  • How can any truely born again Christian defend ANYONE who dishonors our Lord and Savior Jesus Chirst?

To speak as mark Driscoll speaks is not acceptable for the lay member let alone the HIGH CALLING of Pastor, Elder. Read the qualifications. "He is to be ABOVE REPROACH."

  • I question Dragin's walk with God in that HE wants to attack Phil for exposing an issue that affects us all, God is working on me to clean up my own potty mouth when a motorist cut me off the other day and was totally in the wrong then honked at me for trying to get out of his way! Cussing is off the charts today, Phil is shooting straight and if any preacher is using this kind of speech in the church or anywhere else....shame!
