The Philippines was one of the richest places in Asia under Spanish rule. That's a fact, the Pearl of the Orient was called back then

  • If I may,

The relationship of Spain to the Philippines is compared to that of a strict mother and her teenage daughter. Everything was a big misunderstanding because the Spaniards saw in their eyes, and the Filipinos in theirs. The colonizer was simply too far, and the "generation gap" too large. Philippines eventually opted to leave to learn things on her own. As we can observe, traces of the mother, from beliefs to preferred food, are still with the daughter who visits from time to time.

It must be said also that the friars Rizal was denouncing had very little or nothing to do with the first missionaries, who Rizal also admired.

Google Juan de Plasencia, and then Salvador Font, for example, to see the huge difference.

  • @levilicious

Rizal and many others wrote about the abuses of some friars, and they did it in the hope that the government in Spain took notice and did something about it. Unfortunately, the central government took sides with the very friars who were being denounced.

There was a pamphlet in the Philippines at the time that read the following::

"Viva España! Viva el Rey! Viva el Ejercito! Fuera los Frailes!”

(“Long Live Spain! Long Live the King! Long Live the Army! Down with the Friars! )
