The McDonald brothers actually had opened 8 McDonald's. They ran the original and the others were franchised to people who talked them letting them open one. In 1953 Dick McDonald approved the new design with the golden arches. Ray's first McDonalds looked like those. The mascot was Speedy. The clown was created by a Washington, D. C. operator and hired Willard Scott as the first Ronald McDonald. Speedy was a Dick McDonald creation and Kroc retired him in favor of the clown.

I am so sick of people blaming someone else for the fact that they are fat! No one made you fat but yourself! Some company's sell guns does that mean you have to shoot yourself? If you don't want to eat fast food then don't. Some people eat it all the time and are not fat, it's all about balance.

Anyone notice that the kids back then at the start of McDonalds opening are thin and not fat obese children.........Hmmmmmmmmmmmm­.............Fast food a major contributor to over weight issues in children.

@3urkej4mes Well yes that is correct. According to McDonald's, McDonald's was founded by Ray Kroc. When you look at the history link on their website, they do mention during Ray's story that he was surprised by a larger order of milkshake mixers and went to California where he discovered a small hamburger stand run by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald and was fascinatied by their operation. Next he found out their were looking for an agent to open other locations&the bros disappear from story.

McDonalds corp has all but wiped out any history of pre-Kroc McDonalds. I lived in California where the corp.

wanted to tear down historic Mc Donalds. The community helped prevented it's demise. Corp. calls the Des Plaines location the "first" and turned it into a museum. what a crock!!

Croc revolutionized the business world and indeed much of the world has been "Mcdonalized" as a result. It's about the uniformity and sameness of the chain. You can walk into a Mcdonalds anywhere and it's the same exact thing, which was Croc's main idea. This business model has been adopted by everyone from Starbucks to Walmarts to Best Buy. However, we never stop to think about what this has done to our communities and our mom and pa businesses.
