Any idea how an amatuer photog could work there?

Brings back a lot of memories. I wintered over in 1979. It was the best duty I ever had.

Such an ugly place in a beautiful land.

Goth, the custodial staff at McMurdo is the highest educated staff on the planet. The maid for our hospital (yes the maid; cleaning the bathrooms, emptying the trash, etc,) had a doctorate in Pharmacology. This was the one job she could get, and she was trying to get to the Pole! Oh, and rcknralph; leave it to the Navy to build a base at the foot of the only active Volcano on the continent! Mt. Erebus continues to belch steam all the time . . .

@fencinflyer I envy you, I have a year or so I have nothing to do with, and I would so love to go there to do some sort of untrained job (Cook, clean...)

I was there in 1969 and helped build the inside of the main building. I was in the Seabees. They gave me an early out a month after I got back. We lived in the quonset huts with gas stoves.

Good to see some familiar faces from Raytheon IT there in the video. Nothing like marching across the station with a Ethernet patch panel when it's well below freezing
I was stationed there in 2001. Thanks for showing McMurdo General Hospital where I worked and saved a few lives!
