why do you use pre wash?

I don't normally use it but my friend's brother crapped himself and then thought it would be funny to sit on my hat and my cat put mud on my bed sheet so I thought it just needed that extra wash, It would have been on 60 degrees but the label on my sheets and the hat said 40

I always use 60 on sheets even if they say 40 - never had any problems yet :-)
