Too Good To Be True (JB love story) Ch.39

Nick was holding Gabbys hand as they walked down the beach together. After theyd finished breakfast, everyone had split up to go do whatever they wanted, and agreed on meeting up again at 12:00, eat lunch, then go waterskiing and parasailing.
"This is nice," Gabby said. "Just you and me,"
"Yeah..." Nick said, absentmindedly.
Gabby, realizing something wasn't right in the tone of Nicks voice, asked, "What's wrong?"
"What? Oh, nothing," Nick answered, as if snapping back to reality. "Nothing. Its just..."
"Yes?" Gabby asked as they stopped walking to face each other.
"Theres something I have to tell you." He said slowly, taking both Gabby's hands.
"I'm listening..."
Nick closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then opened his eyes again. His expression was so serious, and his eyes were so sincere yet somehow sorrowful.
Gabby didnt say anything. She just stood there, her hands in his, waiting for him to say something.
"Something happened yesterday," Nick finally said.
There was a slight silence. Though it was probably only for a second or so, it felt like decades to the two.
"Oh," Gabby said, her voice shaking. She looked down at their feet once as if to search for the words, then looked back up at Nick. "Maddy?"
"I'm sorry," He whispered.
"It's...It's okay, I knew something like this would happen," Gabby said, no longer having the strength to look into Nicks eyes. "I mean, the way you look at her and everything, I knew you still liked her." She continued, her voice still shaking, "I had this coming. It's my fault you guys arent together in the first place. You probably hate me, don't you?"
"No, no I don't Gabby!" Nick quickly said. "I really like you. It's just..."
"I understand," Gabby sniffed. "And I should probably back off..."
For a while neither one said anything. They held each others hands as they stood there under the warm sun, a tear slowly streaking down Gabby's cheek. Nicks grasp on her hands grew slightly tighter.
Finally when Gabby looked up, she saw something glisten in Nicks eye. There it was, a tear, in Nick Jonas' eye.
Gabby forced a smile. "Don't feel sorry." She said, then let go of Nick's hands and held out just one. "So, friends?"
Nick looked down at the hand Gabby had held out. For a moment he thought about taking it. But instead, he grasped her in his arms for the very last time.
That was it. Something inside Gabby snapped, and she could no longer control her emotions anymore. And there, in Nicks arms, she was crying. What she didn't know then was, over Gabby shoulder, tears were rolling off Nick's eyes, too.
Who knows how long they'd stayed like that. But neither one said a word, and eventually when they let go of each other, Gabby had only said one thing before she ran back to her cottage.
"Thank you,"
