A new political consciousness is on the rise. Who could have predicted just a month ago that on Oct. 15, over 1,500 cities would witness protests and rallies in the name of the "99 percent" against the economic dictatorship of the very rich, the 1%?
Moved by the uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Bahrain, the massive walkouts in Wisconsin and Ohio last year and now the Occupy movement, workers are taking a stand against oppression and exploitation. These inspiring struggles show that when working people enter the political arena and engage in mass action, we become the most powerful agents for change.
But at the end of the day, what can bring an end to the budget cuts, school closures, skyrocketing tuitions, unemployment, racist police brutality, the senseless incarceration of our youth, and the ongoing wars and occupations that afflict so many? Can reforms alone put the needs of poor and working people first when the entire economic system is fueled by the pursuit of maximum profits for banks, corporations and landlords? What can decisively turn this situation around?
Next week, on Saturday, October 29, the San Francisco Branch of Party for Socialism and Liberation will be hosting a Socialism Conference. Come learn about the alternative to capitalist exploitation—and what we can do to get there.
