The name was never changed. It was a localization. Plain and simple.

The created, and thus official, name for the character is Balrog. It's not the Japanese version. It's the original version.

Capcom of America didn't create or develop these characters. That had absolutely no part in that. The only thing they DID do was scare their bosses into thinking that there would be a lawsuit brought by Mike Tyson for infringement.

The fact is that it was bullshit and Tyson never threatened to sue.
