I think you'd be surprised...
While far from the level of the average middle school band, and even pushing some high schoolers... I know some middle school players who consistently outplay high schoolers.

@WaltersQuincy you obviously have no taste of music.

@nllarsen Ah. I understand, thank you! And might I say, this is the best recording I have heard.

I'm curious. In this recording at 5:45, I hear mass pandemonium on the chimes. It sounds awesome and blends in with the chaotic nature of the ending perfectly, but It's not written into the chime part. Ticheli's written chime parts like that before [Angels in the Architecture chorale, anyone?], but it's not in the music or the score at all. I'm just curious as to why they have it in this version.
<3 this piece.

@STApercussionkid The reason why this recording is different from the score is because Dr. Ticheli conducted this performance, and given the unique talents of our Band, he personally asked for the extra chimes to be added to give more vibrancy to the ending.

We're playing this song in my Hgih School's Symphony Band and I absolutley love this song. I LOVE the part at 2:02 (I believe its 103 in the music) where the brass does a lyrical, chorale type part (which was originally a chorale written by Bach) while the high trumpets and the woodwinds have these random fast notes. They're sopposed to symbolize the black abyss of space (the chorale part) and the shooting stars everywhere (the random fast notes). Awesome song.

Thanks for the comment! We actually coupled this movement of the Symphony with Bach's chorale "Who Puts His Trust In God Most Just" arranged by James Croft, including a four-part harmony sung by the Band. It was a ton of fun to play!

WOW! Incredible job! I'm a Luther College alum and we also played this piece for my final concert (Japan and China Tour) in 2005... it's a pain, to say the least! I wish the bassoons were more prominent (being that I am one) but i'm a diva that way! Well done!!

Thank you so much! It was an incredible piece to play, and is still one of my favorites. This is the second time we've played it while I've been in The Band (this time we pulled it for the performance with Dr. Ticheli as the conductor). Please check out the other videos that I have if you'd like to hear more of The Concordia College Band! Thanks again!
