  • Is it just me or did they make up a more conclusive ending here? I get why they did it, of course, it's just...strange. Also there's more sex than I expected. But overall quite a satisfying adaptation of an excellent book.

  • @Handitar hi, I have the book but havent read it yet, so I cant answer your question if the ending is more conclusive, it probably is if youve read the book, so you can compare.

  • This its very very seriusly book

  • Nice to see a movie of a book that you've read.

I have a test about the book this week, so I was happy I could repead the book this way.

  • i saw the whole thing but why julian throwed helen out??/

  • love it, great movie

  • @laurelfan1 Well, Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet are completely different from the night watch. I guess Affinity comes in-between because it is still set in the Victorian era. Since The Night Watch is set during the blitz but also during that bleak post-war period it is just different.... I truly think that it is the finest book Waters has written to date. She is really a writers' writer, and her craftsmanship and artistry are equally superb.

  • @theinkbrain I can't wait to get the book. I agree completely that Sara Waters is an excellent writer. I have Fingersmith. It's an incredible story. You can visualize what is happening because her writing is so descriptive. Now, I'm gonna get Tipping the Velvet, Affinity, and Night Watch.

  • @Handitar yes - of course the ending here is much neater and more hopeful. If you read the book you know how it begins - and ends - because the beginning of the book is also its ending.

Sarah Water's writing is powerful and indelible. She knows a lot about the human soul. She is Hopper adapted to the literary medium. If I had to choose one word for her it would be unforgettable.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I had no idea until tonight that it had been adapted for film, and it filled a very deep need in me to view these images somewhere outside my my head. I imagined Kay very differently and I think she is different in the book - I have never been able to get her out of my mind.

I think the film adaptation was nothing as dark as the book. The book is a spell that will bind you for life if you are susceptible to such things. I myself know I will never escape it.
