student work : sunspace

"sunspace" is intended to filter light on the west-facing terrace of the eric goodwin passage. the collaborators on this project were kezia ofiesh, junghoon han, and taylor burgess (all sarc2008), under the guidance of jeana ripple (our final project for arch546: scripting behaviors). the synthetic paper modules are waterproof and sewn together with nylon thread. the entire framework is attached to four steel cables that span the length between the steel tubes of the goodwin passage to the ground beyond the terrace. the installation is weatherproof but over time we will begin to see the result of structural stress on the modules.

sunspace was intentionally sited at the passage as a different approach to the path of the sun. as a shadow-making device, the modules are largest and most closed off where the sun is the highest. likewise, the smallest and most open modules occur at the westernmost end where the sun is lowest; this arrangement offers a gradient of shadows on the ground. installed during charrette, sunspace is intended to provide a relaxing afternoon shadow to students taking a break from work.
